Those interested in local heritage will be enthralled by Tretower Court and all the castles that the area offers, as well as the Blaenavon World Heritage Site where you can be taken down the Big Pit coalmine by ex miners and see for yourself what life as a miner was like. This is a National Museum now and entry is free. The area South of Penlan Bach is very rich in industrial heritage sites and we have lots of leaflets and books for those who are interested.
The Black Mountains hide fascinating examples of tiny churches like Partrishow, which was missed by Oliver Cromwell’s men, and there is a great day tour which involves wending your way through the heart of the mountains past Llanthony Priory, Cwmyoy and Capel y Ffin to Hay on Wye, before returning home along part of the Wye Valley. You may like to try the Black Mountain Explorer Quiz as you go – details are in Penlan Bach and the local TIC.
The Border Castles of Chepstow, Raglan, Goodrich, Skenfrith, Grosmont and White Castle will keep historians busy, and a trip to The National Museum of Wales at St Fagans just outside Cardiff is a must to see all the old Welsh buildings which have been dismantled from their original settings and lovingly recreated there.
