Food - A Break from Cooking

We are very fortunate to have great eating places locally to suit all budgets. We have a selection of good take-aways, coffee shops and cafes, many of whom serve home prepared lunches and home baked cakes, and a wide variety of pubs serving local produce on their menus. A good example is The Mountain Centre Restaurant at the National Park Visitor Centre, South of Brecon, who serve superb lunches for about £6 using all local produce and the view across The Beacons from here is second to none. Well worth a visit – and we can recommend their late breakfast if you want to have a change from breakfast on your balcony one morning. Local farm sausages from Paddy-the-Butcher served with a view of Penyfan. Fabulous!

Close to home The Red Lion in Llangynidr is renowned for their Sunday lunch which has seven or eight different fresh vegetables with the freshly roasted meat and all the trimmings. They also have occasional evenings featuring foreign menus as well as a good varied menu all week. The ales here are always in good condition too, and our visitors recommend “The Red” thoroughly for their food and drink, friendly service, and good value.

The Dragon Inn in Crickhowell have a Tapas Night every Thursday which is a super way to try different Spanish style dishes, and their main menu on other days is very good too. Both are reasonably priced.

The Bear in Crickhowell is another good choice for bar food as there is a lovely atmosphere in here, and there are numerous other pubs where you will get good locally sourced food without travelling far from Penlan Bach. A folder in the sitting room outlines some local menu options which you can browse at your leisure. You may be staying in a self catering holiday cottage, but few guests cook for themselves every night!

Cooks who do want to eat at home should avail themselves of some of our more unique local delicacies.

There are good local butchers and farm shops for meat and produce. Try local sausage and home cured bacon and sample some laver bread from the local deli.

Meat lovers should try local faggots when they are here, as well as our very best Welsh lamb and Welsh Black beef. In addition to the better known Caerphilly cheese we also have numerous other tasty Welsh cheeses, and all are available in the delicatessen in Crickhowell as well as being served on pub menus. In the late summer local game becomes available and roast pheasant wrapped in home cured bacon is very popular.

“Back again! Really enjoyed ourselves walking, fishing, painting, and trying out all the different eating places in the evenings”

This is seaweed from Swansea Bay and can be fried gently with your bacon. It is easy to find wild mushrooms locally in the summer months, and we have fruit and vegetables from nearby Herefordshire farms.
